Book list – international development

20 06 2008

Here is a list of the books I’ve read to help me understand international development:

“Poor Story” by Giles Bolton
A readable and reasonable introduction with lots of his experiences in Africa

“The Scramble for Africa” by Thomas Pakenham
How Europe got into this mess

“The State of Africa” by Martin Meridith
How Africa has coped over the last 50 years

“The Lexus and the Olive Tree” by Friedman
A somewhat glossy but basically useful overview of globalisation from the point of view of an American journalist a little infatuated by it. Published in 2000 so praises Enron but spots the danger of Bin-Laden types (and mentions Bin Laen).

“The Bottom Billion” by Paul Collier
The real stuff. A passionate but even analysis of the causes of extreme poverty with a few suggestions.

“Guns, Germs and Steel” by Jared Diamond
Why societies develop to different levels. A very interesting read

“Globalisation and its discontents” by Joseph Stiglitz
A former world bank economist slams the IMF. Fascinating.

“The Fortune At The Bottom Of The Pyramid” by Prahad
How the poor can be lifted from poverty by working with big business. Interesting but I’m not totally convinced it is a silver bullet. Could be useful

“No logo” – Naomi Klein
A bit of a misdirected rant against globalisation that combines knee-jerk protectionism with a lack of understanding of economics.

I’ve read the majority here in Ghana, which gives them a bit of a context.

Any more suggestions?

I highly recommend “The end of poverty” by Jeffrey Sachs

Tim Little

Thanks, it’s on my amazon wish list.

Everything I’ve ordered from Amazon has arrived so far (unlike some parcels sent independently). Just a thought for anyone wondering what to do about my impending birthday. You should be able to find the wishlist by searching on Amazon for me.

I’ve read “The End of Poverty” now as well as William Easterly’s response to. My thoughts are here:

I’d recommend both
