The word “tim” means medicine in the local language

2 11 2007

Just one snippet of information I acquired whilst attending a workshop on “Male involvement in sexual and reproductive health” yesterday.

Other facts were more depressing.  The Northern Region (where I am) has the highest maternal morbidity rate in a country that has an average of 540 deaths per 100,000 compared to 11 per 100,000 births in the UK.  That means an woman is almost 50 times more likely to die giving birth in Ghana than in the UK.  15% of girls between the ages of 15 – 19 are already mothers and the average woman in the Northern Region will have 7 children.
