The Constant Gardener

19 04 2007

It’s a while since I’ve read any John le Carré, but I really enjoyed the Smiley series and “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” is a superb book – well worth reading, as is the “Constant Gardener”.  It has been sitting on my “to read” pile for a over a year and finally got its chance Easter Monday.

Whilst not quite as good as le Carré’s early stuff I was still captivated, sneaking peeks at work and reading on the tube.  Set mostly in Kenya it explores the machinations of “big pharma” and the complicity of international organisations.  He paints a vibrant and compassionate picture of Africa and Africans.  The baddies (and hero) are clearly of European origin.  Disappointingly the ending is believable but anti-climatic.

I’m not sure about some of the implications in the book, but overall a good read.
